Hi, I’m Grant Niskanen — founder of Badlands Seamless Gutters.

I never set out to be a gutter guy.

I was working full-time at the fire department, pulling 48 hours on and 96 hours off. In between shifts, I kept hearing from local contractors that there was a real need for someone reliable to do gutters — someone who would show up, do good work, and stand behind it.

I didn’t know the first thing about gutters. But I couldn’t ignore the opportunity as I have always felt a calling to start my own business. 

I spent countless hours on YouTube, Google — anywhere I could find information. I read, watched, studied. Then I made the decision to bet on myself.

I didn’t have the money I needed to get started, so I cashed out my 401k from an old oilfield job. It wasn’t an easy decision, but it gave me just enough to buy a gutter machine, a trailer, and a few basic tools — all paid for in cash. No safety net. Just belief and hard work.

I started by calling everyone I knew, letting them know I was doing rain gutters now.

When I landed my first few jobs, I required 50% down just to afford the materials. Every dollar mattered. Every job mattered. Every customer mattered.

Fast forward to today — I’m still working full-time at the fire department, but now Badlands Seamless Gutters has grown to a team of four full-time employees and one part-time. It’s been a journey built on grit, resourcefulness, and a whole lot of faith.

Starting with almost nothing taught me how to make the most of what I had.

How to learn fast.

How to push through hard days.

How to figure it out when the answer isn’t obvious.

Those lessons continue to guide us today.

In my career as a firefighter, I’ve witnessed the full spectrum of life — from the miracle of childbirth to heartbreaking loss. It’s given me a deep perspective: life is precious, and it’s short. Every moment matters. Every decision matters. Every relationship matters.

That’s why at Badlands Seamless Gutters, our mission is simple but powerful:

We’re still growing, still learning, and we know mistakes can happen. But we will always own them. We will always make them right.
